Will Getting Veneers Result in Sensitive Teeth?

If your teeth are beginning to show signs of wear, you may be considering cosmetic dental treatments like porcelain veneers. These thin shells can correct a range of cosmetic issues, including stained teeth, cracks, chips, or alignment issues, misshapen teeth, and gaps. Since a small amount of enamel has to be removed to prepare teeth for veneers, you may wonder if this will cause sensitive teeth. Continue reading to learn how the process works, the perks, and if veneers will make your teeth more sensitive.

Will Veneers Lead to Increased Tooth Sensitivity?

Veneers are thin shells that are made from dental-grade porcelain shells. They cover the entire front of one’s tooth. The reason why a small amount of enamel is removed to attach them is to ensure that they blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile and stick to your teeth properly.

You should expect to experience a bit of sensitivity after having veneers placed. The sensitivity can last several days to several weeks. With that being said, some patients have little to no sensitivity. If your two months pass and your teeth are still sensitive or you feel extremely uncomfortable, contact your dentist as soon as you can so they can find out what the problem is.

How to Relieve Tooth Sensitivity

Veneers may actually help decrease tooth sensitivity. This is because they create a barrier from irritants by covering the front surface of the teeth. Even so, for those who experience increased sensitivity after veneer placement, a few ways to relieve sensitivity include:

  • Salt water rinse – Add half a teaspoon of salt to one cup of lukewarm water. Gargle with the mixture twice per day. This will work as an antiseptic and will also help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Desensitizing toothpaste – This blocks the pain signals that travel from the surface of the teeth and the sensory nerves in them to lessen discomfort.
  • Brush – Using a soft-bristled toothbrush will lessen your risk of scratching your enamel or veneers. Do so after every meal to lessen sensitivity.

Though it’s not uncommon to experience some mild sensitivity after you have veneers placed, be sure to let your dentist know if it goes on for a while or is intense. They will do what they can to relieve your discomfort so you can start enjoying your beautiful beam to the fullest!
