What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a cap placed over the entire surface of a tooth above the gum line. It’s a common treatment in restorative dentistry because it can reinstate the health and function of a tooth. It can also protect it -from additional damage. Thanks to all-ceramic material, crowns can also offer aesthetic benefits. It’s not uncommon for dental crowns to be used along with other treatments, like root canal therapy, bridges, or dental implants. No matter the reason, our office uses high-quality materials to enhance the aesthetics, function, and tissue compatibility to create the ideal restoration for your specific needs.

The Dental Crown Process

You’ll first undergo an initial consultation with our team so that we can evaluate your oral health and determine if dental crowns are the best solution for you. We’ll also discuss the price of the treatment and walk you through the process so you know what to expect. Our team can also provide CEREC same-day crowns, which will allow you to repair your tooth much more quickly.

For traditional dental crowns, we’ll begin the process by removing a tiny portion of your enamel to make room for your restoration. Afterward, we’ll take impressions of your tooth to send to a trusted dental lab for fabrication. While you wait, you’ll have to wear a temporary crown to keep your underlying tooth protected.

After your permanent crown is complete, you’ll come back to us to have it placed over your tooth. We’ll evaluate your bite and ensure that you’re satisfied with the results before sending you off to enjoy your repaired and healthy tooth!

A well-timed dental crown can provide patients with a lot of relief, and we don’t want paying for care to stand in the way of that. When you see us, we’ll make sure that payment is as pain-free as possible and will arm you with all the information you’ll need to effectively budget for the procedure.

Until we can meet you and can give you more personalized advice, here are just a few of the things that you should know.

Factors that Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

Due to the variables in what different people’s dental crowns are like, it can be a bit of a challenge to say for sure what a given person’s dental crown is likely to cost. Here are some of the variables you may want to consider when budgeting for dental care:

  • What kind of material you use for your dental crown. Each has their merits, and even among ceramics, some are more expensive than others.
  • How significant the damage is to your tooth. This will partially determine…
  • What kind of preliminary treatments you’ll need before getting your dental crown.

We’ll talk to you about how each of these variables pertain to you, and give you an estimate for the cost of your care when we meet you in person.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Provided you’re getting a dental crown for medically necessary reasons, you can expect most dental plans to pay for at least a portion of your dental care. Depending on your plan, insurance companies will usually pay for around 50% of the cost of your dental crown. We’ll help you coordinate with your insurance plan in order to help you get a sense of what kind of care is going to be covered.

Other Options for Making Dental Crowns Affordable

That said, we believe that your options for what kind of care you get shouldn’t be limited by what your dental plan is able to cover. That’s why we work with financing companies that can make services that wouldn’t otherwise be affordable fit your budget.

We accept both CareCredit and Lending Club, both of which offer low-to-no interest financing terms to patients who qualify. We’ll be happy to walk you through all the financial options available to you when we meet you in person, so if you’re concerned about affording care, give us a call today!
