Your Summerlin Dentist for healthy smiles. The appearance and function of your teeth largely relies on the health of your teeth and gums. With the right care, you can help to ensure your smile stays healthy and beautiful for a lifetime. However, many often believe brushing their teeth twice a day is enough. In reality, keeping your teeth healthy requires much more than daily brushing. With the health of your teeth directly linked to your overall health and your quality of life, you need to take extra measures to ensure your oral health. As your Summerlin dentist, Summerlin Center for Aesthetic Dentistry has the tips you need for a healthy, beautiful smile.

Home Oral Hygiene

Your home oral hygiene routine is vital to protecting your teeth and gums from damage. It is recommended you brush your teeth twice a day. Brushing is needed to remove food particles, plaque and tarter from the teeth which leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Using a soft bristled toothbrush, hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and gently brush the teeth in a back and forth motion. Be sure to brush all of the surfaces of teeth and your tongue for maximum results.

In addition to brushing, you need to floss your teeth daily, preferably at night. Flossing removes the plaque and tarter accumulations left behind from brushing. When plaque and tarter are not removed, it can lead to gum disease. To properly floss, use about 18 inches of an ADA approved dental floss. Insert the floss in between two teeth to hug a tooth. Then, slide the floss down to the gum line and back up to the crown of the tooth. Repeat this process for each tooth.

Regular Dental Appointments

No matter how well you care for your teeth at home, you still need to visit your dentist in Summerlin twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings. A professional cleaning removes plaque and tarter that was left behind from brushing and flossing to prevent gum disease. A regular dental checkup will evaluate your oral health to provide the necessary treatments to prevent damage to your teeth and gums.

Balanced Diet

The foods and drinks you consume impact your smile. You need to eat a well-balanced diet to ensure you develop and maintain strong, healthy teeth. In addition, you need to avoid foods that can cause tooth decay, such as surgery, starchy, or acidic foods. A well-balanced diet will ensure your teeth have the nutrients they need while also helping to ward off gum disease and tooth decay.
