What Are Porcelain Veneers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Porcelain veneers are thin, ceramic shells that are bonded to the front surface of your tooth. They\u2019re a popular solution to perfect minor aesthetic flaws in your smile. This versatile solution can be customized to match the shade of your natural teeth and is coated with a glaze durable enough to resist any additional staining and chipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veneers are about 0.5 mm thick, so for them to line up against your gumline properly, your dentist will need to remove some of your enamel. Although only a small amount is removed, it doesn\u2019t regenerate so veneers are essentially irreversible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are Lumineers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lumineers are very similar to veneers in that they\u2019re also made of a durable ceramic material used to cover the front of your tooth. Because they\u2019re thinner than veneers at about 0.2 mm thick, your dentist won\u2019t have to remove any enamel to place them. That means that this treatment can be used to address many of the same issues as porcelain veneers, but without permanently altering any tooth structure. Porcelain veneers are an incredibly popular way to hide many types of issues in your grin, including gapped or crooked teeth. They can be placed in such a way that they hide these problems to give your smile a perfectly even appearance. Plus, they\u2019re thick enough to protect the underlying tooth from sustaining further injury. That makes them both a functional and beautiful solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Are Lumineers Best?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re uncomfortable with the idea of having some of your protective enamel removed, then you may want to ask your dentist about Lumineers. They can mask many of the same issues as veneers, though they are somewhat less effective at hiding crooked or gapped teeth because they\u2019re so thin. You might anticipate that they will last longer than traditional veneers because they often don\u2019t need to be replaced for two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
